I want the scientific answer....

So Friday I had to take Ross to the pediatrician because he has a sinus infection that was on the edge of an ear infection. While we were there, I asked them to give Owen the shot he missed at 15 months because of a vaccine shortage. Ross was very keen on seeing Owen get a shot.

On the way home, I reminded a gloating Ross that he was still looking at a lifetime of stick and pricks, especially when he got old like me. I pointed out to him how many times I had to get stuck while we were waiting for Owen.

At this point, Ross (who is 9) changes the conversation by interjecting: "You know, I just don't get it, exactly how did you make a baby?"

Yes at that point you could hear crickets in the car and I started to cringe, I was not ready for this question...in the car...on the fly... so I replied, "That is a very good question Ross."

Ross continued: "I want the scientific answer, not the other answer."

"Of course," says I, "I will give you a scientific answer. What other answer do you think I would give you?"

"The religious answer about Heavenly Father did it." says Ross.

Then Ross adds, "Do you even know how it happened?"

I did not laugh, just so you know, I assured Ross, "Yes I know exactly how it happened." and then I got brilliant and told him, "Ross that is a great question" (again)"but the answer is a little too complicated to give you in the car while we are driving around, so if you will ask me and Daddy tonight at dinner, we will give you a scientific answer."

"Okay" replies Ross "cause you know really except for the hair and the private spots, girls and boys aren't all that different."

At this point I was taking deep breaths.

So far, Ross has not remembered to ask again and when he does I am going to go with the less is more plan.

Oh my, I remember when Joan and I asked that question, Mom got us a book, it was gross. I also remember in 6th grade health when all the girls had to watch a video and Catherine Hawkins asked the question "But how..." All I could think was eeeeewwwww!

Luckily I got over that. :)

LOL! Oh that is awesome! especially the "hair and private parts" comment! I think this is every mother's worst fear. I posted about it earlier this year. The funny thing is, I prefer to talk about it in the car. Then I don't feel like I'm staring at them, and I can't see their faces if they cringe in disgust! Although it always hits me like a ton of bricks totally out of the blue! I can't imagine having boys, good luck with that one! He is hilarious!

I still have to laugh, even though we talked about it. I am glad it is still a ways off (I hope). Scientific answer...quite the Ross phrase, I think.

Too Funny Ann! I can't wait to hear what you do finally tell him when he does finally bring it up again---YOU KNOW HE WILL. I'm laughing!

I remember the book. I remember ROLLING on the floor in hysterics - To this day, I have never seen or heard anything as funny as mom and that book. "As the body enters puberty...." I still marvel at how she say that with a straight face.

Tell Ross he is right - the only differences between boys and girls are hairstyles and private parts. Girls can do anything you can do better. Glad you've got that boy on the right track. Girl power.
