Trying To Overcome The Curse of a Brown Thumb

I have never had much success gardening. My mother and all my grandparents could grow anything anywhere but not me. I tend to kill plants, not on purpose, I just can't keep them alive for long. It is cruel to give me plants. I did have a plant all through college, his name was Vincent. He went to my office with me too when I got my first engineering job but eventually even he fell victim to my curse.

Why do I bring this up? After much talking, Jason and I have finally decided that we have to start gardening. We agree not to spend money, time and energy on anything that we can't eat, so we have planted herbs and veggies. We picked things that other friends have grown around here with success to try to boost our confidence before we try tricky plants like tomatoes.

Here are the peppers, parsley, oregano and eggplants.

These are rosemary, basil, and more peppers.

As you can see, I have managed to keep Owen alive so far and that has been no small feat.

After some serious pruning and mulching my blueberry bushes are showing promise...mmmm muffins!

We even have a few figs, but that crop is still a month or so away.

So maybe I did plant a few flowers in my hanging pots too. :)

My biggest worry for my little garden right now is the squirrels, we have so many of the fuzzy tailed varmits in our back yard, they are digging holes everywhere.

The first time one of them digs up my plants I may start looking for a recipe for squirrel stew.
For now, we are watering and fertilizing and praying over our little garden with the hope that this experience will lead to bigger and better things in the years to come. I will keep you posted.
